Alhambra Source and the Alhambra Police Department have launched an initiative to engage more minority residents in the community. As part of this new project, we re-launched our "Ask an Alhambra cop" column with Chief Mark Yokoyama. Got a question? Submit it below or send it to [email protected]!

When should you call 911 and when should you call a non-emergency number?

You should call 911 only in emergency situations. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police or fire departments or medical services. Emergencies are generally categorized as situations that are life-threatening or injurious to another, such as crimes in progress, fires, and requests for immediate medical assistance.

Non-emergency phone numbers should be used for general assistance, questions, or for crimes that are not in progress or injurious to others. If you are ever in doubt of whether a situation is an emergency you should call 911. It's better to be safe and let the 911 operator determine if you need emergency assistance.

In non-emergency situations, you can call the Alhambra Police Department at 626-570-5151 and the Alhambra Fire Department at 626-570-5190.

  1. Poor Chinese translation for “When should you call 911?” I guess someone did not understand Chinese and just used Google Translate. Google Translate is a good tool but it is not 100% accurate or reliable. The correct Chinese translation for “When should you call 911?” is: 你什麼時候應該撥打911?

    1. Thank you for your correction! We are a very small team, and our translators are all volunteers. When they are unavailable, we do use Google Translate, although we try to do it very sparingly. So we always appreciate your help. If you notice anything else in the future, please let us know. You can also email me — [email protected]. Thank you! -Nasrin A.
