What is the Alhambra Police Department doing about crime on Main Street?

ASK A COP: The Alhambra Source asks your questions to the Alhambra Police Department. Send your questions to [email protected].

Some people complain about higher levels of crime and public disorder around the Main St. clubs and bars, especially during the weekend. What are the most prevalent crimes resulting from activity in those clubs and bars? And what strategies can the police use to manage the problem?

The most prevalent crime in the downtown area is theft, especially theft from vehicles, which is not uncommon when you have an area that attracts a higher number of people. We need to consider that more people in the downtown area mean more cars in the area as well. Unfortunately, people don’t always lock their cars or they leave items such as purses and GPS devices in plain view, making it easy for thieves to access valuables. We encourage people to leave their valuables at home or lock them in a trunk before they get to their parking space; and to always lock their car.

Occasionally the police department is called to assist with disruptive patrons in local clubs and bars. In April, 2011, the Alhambra Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Section (COPS) applied for and received a grant from the State of California/Department of Alcohol Beverage Control. The COPS Officers use the grant money to hold classes designed to educate bar and night club owners, managers, security guards and waitresses about the problems that arise from excessive alcohol and drunk driving. In addition, Corporal Jasper Kim from the COPS Unit conducts on-site inspections at all of the downtown clubs and restaurants to further educate and to confirm that the establishments are following all state laws and city ordinances.

COPS Officers also do enforcement operations. In this series of ongoing operations, multiple officers are deployed in the downtown area looking for any alcohol related violations. The COPS Section conducts undercover operations as well to ensure that minors are not being served alcohol. The Alhambra PD Traffic Section assists the COPS Section by concentrating their efforts in the downtown area to enforce DUI violations.   Meanwhile, officers known as the “George” units regularly patrol the downtown area on Friday and Saturday nights and whenever large crowds are expected. These operations continue to this day.

What people can do is call the police if they see something suspicious or unusual: Things like cars circling the area, people loitering in the parking lots or looking into cars. Too often people don’t call because they don’t want to “bother” the police. It is not a bother; please call us if something is going on.
