On Nov. 6, 2018, Alhambra residents will have the opportunity to vote for three open City Council seats and two open Alhambra Unified School District Board of Education seats. Here’s what you need to know in order to run.
Which seats are open?
The City of Alhambra is divided up into five council districts, while the Alhambra Unified School District is divided into five nominating districts. Elections are held on every even-numbered year. Those elected serve a four-year term. On City Council, council members are limited to serving three terms in a row. There are no term limits for school board.
The 1st, 2nd and 5th districts of the Alhambra City Council and the 4th and 5th nominating districts of the Alhambra Unified School District are open this election.
City Council elections are at large, which means any resident of the City is eligible to vote in any of the council district elections. Candidates, however, run to represent a district.

Requirements to be a candidate for office in Alhambra
Candidates running for City Council must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in the district they’re running and have resided in their district for at least 30 days before filing a declaration of intention to run.
Candidates running for school board must have the right to vote in the Alhambra Unified School District, must be a registered voter in their nominating district and must have resided in the district they’re running for at least one month prior to their nomination.
June 18-June 26: Candidates must file a Declaration of Intention to run for office
July 16-August 26: Candidates must file nomination papers and candidate statements
Sept. 25: last day to file campaign expenditure statements or a Form 700 (1st report)
Oct. 8-Oct. 30: Voters can request Vote by Mail ballots
Oct. 22: Last day to register to vote in order to take part in this election
Oct. 25: Candidates must file a 2nd report of their Form 700
Nov. 6: Voting day
What do these terms mean?
Declaration of Intention: a form that the candidate fills out in front of the City Clerk asking for basic information, including voter registration information. Candidates must file this no more than 30 days or less than 20 days before presenting nomination papers.
Nomination papers: A form provided by the City Clerk that 50 registered votes from the candidate’s district must sign to nominate the candidate for a City Council election. School board candidates need 75 signatures from registered voters in their nominating district.
Form 700: This is a State of Economic Interests form and is required by the State of California for anybody running for office. Form 700s disclose candidates’ personal financial interests to show that they’re running in the public’s best interest and to disclose potential conflicts of interest.
Candidate statement: Optional for candidates wishing to have a short statement about themselves and their platform on sample ballots that are mailed out to voters. Candidate statements cost money and are restricted to a certain word count and format.
