What we learned from a documentary filmmaker about journalism

  • Humanist Films' Ming Lai presented at the Alhambra Source's Community Voices meeting on August 29. All photos by Phoenix Tso.

  • His presentation was on how to shoot high quality video and audio as a journalist with a backpack of equipment and a plan.

  • Community Voices contributors listen intently.

  • Ming's latest documentary, "Visions of Warriors," follows four veterans as they treat their PTSD by training as photographers.

In his presentation on “backpack journalism,” documentary filmmaker Ming Lai took the Alhambra Source Community Voices contributors through producing high-quality multimedia journalism. Turns out, you don’t need the most expensive equipment, but a good plan and a willingness to experiment and think on one’s feet. We’re so grateful to Ming for taking the time to teach us what he knows. Check out his latest film, Visions of Warriors, which follows veterans as they treat their mental illness by participating in the groundbreaking Veteran Photo Recovery Project, which we wrote about in 2014.

Independent journalism is a bedrock of democracy--and it's in crisis. Here at the Alhambra Source, we're committed to covering the local stories that matter most to you. We don’t have advertisers and we don’t have pay walls, but we do have bills. You read to the end of this story. That's great. But this kind of journalism will end without public support. Join us!
