Alhambra , CA United States

Alhambra mainstay Marini Music is closing at the end of this week after 18 years in business.

The owner John Marini said that he would still run his online instrument business, but that he was sad to lose the ability to teach lessons and make repairs for the community.

“We do a workshop for 14-year-old kids and it’s like a rock band,” Marini said. “One of my students started when she heard we were closing.”

Marini grew up in Alhambra and worked at Pedrini Music for 23 years. He then took over Pedrini Music, offering instrument sales and lessons to countless countless community members.

Marini said that he decided to close the store after the new owners, KCN Investments, LLC, bought the building and raised the rent.

Felix Liu, one of the new property managers, said that KCN raised the rent to market value in order to cover a property tax increase. He said that the company was open to any businesses, particularly restaurants and were hoping to help transform Alhambra’s Main Street into a destination like Old Town Pasadena.
