Jon Thurber, former publisher of the Alhambra Source, is being honored with the California School Boards Association’s Golden Quill Award for his extensive reporting on the Alhambra Unified School District and public education.
Thurber was one of six journalists throughout California cited by the association for “fair, insightful and accurate reporting on public school news.” A veteran journalist with four decades at the Los Angeles Times, Thurber was the publisher at the Alhambra Source until June this year and worked to expand the website’s offerings by doing a lot of reporting himself.
He was nominated for the award by the Alhambra school board, which will present the award virtually at its meeting next week. The California School Boards Association established the award to recognize “outstanding education journalism and highlight the essential role journalists play in increasing understanding of the objectives, operations, accomplishments, challenges and opportunities related to public schools.”
