How I took the picture that is now featured on Judy Chu’s Facebook page

Alex Rivest tells us how he took the photo that is now U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Facebook cover photo.

Ever since moving to Los Angeles from Boston, I have wanted to get a chance to see the stars through the telescopes up on Mt. Wilson. It was through these very telescopes that Edwin Hubble discovered that our galaxy was not alone in the universe.

I jumped at my first opportunity to see the stars through the 60-inch telescope and snapped this picture.

It’s a wonderful thing to do in our backyard and represents the very thing that separates us from other species: we strive for a better understanding of the universe and our place in it.

Alex Rivest, a resident of Alhambra, won Chu’s annual #BestOf27 contest. A print of his photo will also hang in her office in Washington D.C.
