The Alhambra Police Department will establish two checkpoints and a patrol to prevent drunk driving from now until Labor Day.

The first checkpoint takes place Friday, Aug. 17 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Beacon Street, Alhambra police announced in a press release. The department is planning for two driver’s license checkpoints, as well as one roving patrol.

The goal is to prevent driving a car or motorcycle while impaired by alcohol, cannabis or prescription drugs. Similar operations will continue through Labor Day weekend, one of the riskiest times for traffic deaths caused by alcohol.

The operation is part of the national campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” and will also include increased enforcement by the Los Angeles County Sheriff and California Highway Patrol.
