ALDI opening draws long lines

After decades of success in its native Germany, ALDI grocery stores aims to open 2,500 stores in the United States by 2022. On Thursday, it added to that count with a grand opening at its new Alhambra location.

ALDI is known for its low prices, achieved with cost-saving measures like a cart system where customers pay a quarter to use one, and get the quarter back when they return it. The company also develops its own product lines, which they change depending on the season. Alhambra’s ALDI store has opened with an emphasis on organic produce, and a large dairy and bakery selection.

Alhambra residents seem excited for this new grocery store. Shoppers saw a 20-minute line out the store when they visited ALDI yesterday.

  1. Trader Joe’s is part of Aldi Nord while ALDI is part of Aldi Süd, two legally and financially separate companies.

  2. It is not commonly known that Trader Joe’s is part of the same organization in Germany that operates Aldi.
