Stopping for a brake shop

[email protected] are portraits of the City of Alhambra and the people who go about their lives here.

On a visit to the veterinarian, Karol Franks spotted Caroll’s Brake Service on Main Street. The family business has serviced Alhambra for close to 50 years.

The photo: The simplicity of Carroll’s Brake Service piqued Karol Franks’ curiosity.  “I have often passed this building and I liked its low profile with large letters, in contrast to the tall, lanky palm trees. I thought it would make an interesting photo. I often carry my camera with me and was able to stop one day.”

Leo Carroll opened his brake service shop in 1957 after building his home on a vacant lot on Main Street. Leo Jr. operates the shop with his two adult sons Jason and Jeremiah.

The photographer: Karol Franks lives in Pasadena and frequents Alhambra from time to time. She shoots local architecture and enjoys exploring Southern California with her online photography friends. Franks uses her photography to document her volunteer work. We found Karol Franks at flickr.com.

  1. My husband and I have used Carrolls Break Service for years. You can sit there and wait while they work on your car they are so fast and reliable. They are honest, do excellent work and have been a real asset to the community.

  2. Very reliable, good and honest fast service. Never overcrowded like other places on Valley Blvd.

  3. I lived right behind that place for a year… Never used their services though.
