JOB TITLE: Alhambra Source “Staff Writer”
REPORTS TO: The Co-founders and Publisher, communicates, as needed, with the Project Leader
The Alhambra Source (AS) is an exciting digital news organization that reports on the diverse ethnic communities in Alhambra and the San Gabriel Valley. Under the fiscal sponsorship of Community Partners, Alhambra Source seeks to reinvent local journalism and promote civic engagement.
The AS Staff Writer will:
Cover events in and around the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra:
As staff writer of the Alhambra Source, the successful candidate, will actively cover events in and around Alhambra, including its municipal government, school system, police and fire departments, and other issues of interest, including the 2020 Census, and the 2020 municipal elections. Experience in developing and executing coverage plans for municipal government would be a plus.
This position is under the direction and editorial control of the Publisher and will involve frequent communication and interaction on story lists, story assignments and story editing. The successful candidate will be expected to report and file a minimum of two full-length stories each week. Hours will be structured as needed to cover government meetings and other assignments.
Operate WordPress and employ customary technical skills required for the media site:
The website operates on WordPress software; fluency with WordPress is essential, and experience in coding is an asset. Experience in news photography and videography is expected, as is knowledge of AP Style and California media law. At present, the website is importantly supplemented by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WeChat. The successful candidate should have strong social media skills and be able to keep up with the ever-changing media environment.
Attend meetings and Events:
Expected to attend Alhambra Source staff meetings and events as required.
Collaborate with other staff:
The Staff Writer will provide support for the Publisher and collaborate with the Community Outreach Manager and other staff. The Staff Writer will share in the responsibility of implementing the strategic plan to insure the sustainability of the organization.
This is a part-time (20-hour a week) position, with flexible hours and weekend activities as needed.
