The Alhambra Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint by the intersection of Fremont Avenue and Orange Street on Friday, August 21, from 7:00pm to 3:00am.
In a press release, the APD said that this effort is part of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” a nation-wide campaign that involves police departments from across the country. The initiative aims to promote drunk driving awareness as Labor Day approaches. From August 21 to September 7, police departments all over the nation will be ramping up efforts to take drunk drivers off the road.
In 2013, 867 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in California, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the NHTSA, approximately 27 percent of the fatalities that happened on Labor Day involved drivers with a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher, almost twice the illegal limit.
