Monterey Park puts "modern Latin" signs on hold

Monterey Park City Council delayed Wednesday a decision regarding its "modern Latin alphabet" sign ordinance until Oct. 2 after its preliminary approval sparked controversy in the city, Pasadena Star-News reports. 

Councilmen Anthony Wong, Peter Chan, and Hans Liang were concerned that the proposed regulation requiring all businesses to post at least one sign in a Latin alphabet may be unconstitutional. Councilman Mitchell Ing supported the ordinance, arguing Monterey Park will be more viable if Asian businesses also displayed signs in a Latin language.
