Maternity tourism, a business often involving illegal hotels where expectant mothers from other countries stay to give birth, has shown up locally, with cases last year in Monterey Park and San Gabriel. The issue is now stretching as far as Chino Hills, where officials said Monday they were investigating a home where Chinese women stay to give birth to American babies, the Los Angeles Times reports. A group, Not in Chino Hills, formed to protest the practice.
Officials began the investigation after neighbors complained about traffic and a sewage spill, according to The Times. The hotel is on Woodglen Drive, an area zoned for single-family houses. Officials have issued a cease-and-desist order for operating a hotel in a residential zone and plan to take the property owner to court.
