Mark Keppel wins LA County Academic Decathlon

The Mark Keppel High School Academic Decathlon team is the Los Angeles County champion after a two-day competition on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, the L.A. Times reports.

The Alhambra Unified high school edged out 55 other teams to earn a spot in the state competition on March 20-23 in Sacramento, according to the L.A. Times. Alhambra High School also made it into the competition as a "wild card" entrant along with 10 other schools.

One of the top athletes in the L.A. County decathlon was AHS student Bonnie Lam, who scored 8,294.6 points out of 10,000, third-highest in the L.A. County competition, the L.A. Times reports.

The Academic Decathlon is a scholastic team competition that tests the knowledge of high school students. Decathletes compete in 10 events: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech, according to the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
