A 26-year old transient was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in front of the Downtown Alhambra Starbucks, the Pasadena Star-News is reporting.

On Thursday evening, Richard Covarrubias, 26, allegedly challenged a 43-year-old man standing outside the coffee shop to fight. He then stabbed him with a knife leaving a 4-inch gash in his hand, Police Lieutenant Jennifer Wiese told the Star-News. The victim said he recognized Covarrubias, but does not know why he challenged him. Covarrubias is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail and will be arraigned Monday in Alhambra Superior Court.
