Alhambra Source and the Alhambra Police Department have launched an initiative to engage more minority residents in the community. As part of this new project, we re-launched our "Ask an Alhambra cop" column with Chief Mark Yokoyama. Got a question? Send it to [email protected]!

I'm an international student in forensic science. After graduation, do I have to become a police officer before a forensic scientist?

If you want to become a crime scene investigator or forensic scientist, you do not need to be a police officer first. These are two different professions.

To become a forensic scientist, there are college courses and advanced training you can take at colleges and universities. After obtaining training, you can seek employment at various police agencies that employ forensic science professionals and provide additional training on the job.

  1. Linda Trevillian

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State L.A.) has one of the finest forensic science programs in the country, a Master of Science degree in Criminalistics, housed within the College of Health and Human Services. The new Davis-Hershberg Regional Crime Lab, which houses most of the labs for the LAPD and La Sheriffs’ Department, is located on the campus; the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics also has its offices and classrooms in that building. The foundation for this master’s degree program is a bachelor’s degree with a major in either Chemistry or Biology.

  2. A better translation of the title is And the 中國的 link under the date should read 中文. And the Chinese translation of the content “我是一名学习法医学的国际留学生, 如果毕业后我致力于本专业,是否意味着我同时成为警察呢?” means “I’m an international student in forensic science. If after graduation I work in this profession, does that mean I would also become a police officer at the same time?” So, it is not quite the same as the English original.
