Alhambra Source and the Alhambra Police Department have launched an initiative to engage more minority residents in the community. As part of this new project, we re-launched our "Ask an Alhambra cop" column with Chief Mark Yokoyama. Got a question? Submit it below or send it to [email protected]!

Do you always have to yield to an emergency vehicle?

When an emergency vehicle — such as a fire truck, ambulance, or police car — is approaching with lights and siren, the California Vehicle Code requires all non-emergency vehicles to yield the right of way. Drivers must safely pull to the right side of the roadway and stop until the emergency vehicle passes.

If you are at an intersection, do not pull into the intersection on a red light or stop in the middle of an intersection. Proceed to the right when safely able to do so. Driving in traffic or gridlock can make pulling to the right difficult, but if all vehicles do so a lane can be created for emergency vehicles to pass on the left.

If you are driving on a road with a median, you are still required to pull to the right. During impacted traffic times, emergency vehicles will use the opposite sides of the street and in rare occasions may go over the median to pass traffic.
