Cub Scouts from Pack 311 based in San Gabriel, participated in a study being conducted by NASA and Rice University while attending the "We Choose Space" exhibit at the March Air Museum this past weekend.  The study is focused on the effectiveness of using an inflatable Discovery Dome to teach the public about the history and future of space exploration.

Prior to entering the planetarium show in the discovery dome, the scouts and their families were given a list of questions to answer about space exploration. After they finished the show they were again give the same list of questions to see the retention of information.  The data is later collected by NASA to improve the show experience.

Beginning with Mission Control, the exhibit traces the early days of space exploration with the Mercury, Gemini,  and Apollo programs and includes space era memorabilia, helmets, gloves and shuttle tiles.   On loan from NASA is an inflatable discovery Dome Planetarium.  "It was an exciting experience for our scouts to physically see and experience the old with the new in aviation," said Cubmaster Padilla.  "We felt the disvoery dome was a real engaging and fun way to keep the scouts attention since their ages range from 6-12 yrs old," added Padilla.

The outing was coordinated to achieve the Historical Museum achievement by learning about the history of US armed forces aviation.  While the scouts were led by a docent tour, they also experienced the P-38 exhibit were they met a WWII veteran pilot of the P-38, climbed into the belly of the bombing bay of a B-52, and were taken away from the sight of an SR-71 Lockheed inside the main hangar.
