Alhambra Source invited to participate in lion dance at Monterey Park Farmers Market

Lion Dancers are coming to the Monterey Park Farmers Market on Friday night and Alhambra Source is honored to participate. At 6:30 p.m., the Mark Keppel High School group will perform the traditional dance and Alhambra Source senior editor Daniela Gerson will help paint the lion's eye as part of the opening ceremony.

The lion dance is performed by two dancers in costume who mimic a lion's movement, with one dancer at the head of the lion and one at the tail. The painting ceremony — during which a significant member of the community is invited to paint an eye on the head of the lion — brings the dance to life, according to Shaolin Fists Kung Fu Centre.

The Mark Keppel dance group, formed last year, is made up of 20-30 students and also performs at Alhambra Unified School District functions.Come join us at the Monterey Park Farmers Market on Friday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at 318 S. Ramona Ave!
