The U.S. News and World Report 2009 rankings of best high schools gave Alhambra High, Mark Keppel, and San Gabriel each a silver medal, reserved for schools with high levels of college readiness. California fared the third best of any state in the study with 110 schools, or 6% of the total number, receiving gold or silver medals. Gold medals, reserved for the top 100 schools in the nation, were presented to 20 schools in the state. Of those, six were from Los Angeles county.
