San Gabriel mayor arrested for alleged robbery, assault, battery

San Gabriel Mayor Albert Huang was arrested at approximately 1:15 am Friday morning for allegedly robbing a woman and driving away at high speed with her hanging on the car.

Huang got into a heated argument with the female subject at The Dumpling House on 301 W Valley Boulevard, according to the San Gabriel Police Department. As the argument escalated, he grabbed the female’s purse, entered her car and attempted to drive away. Police said that the purse contained the victim’s car keys, cash and personal effects. The female victim stood on the vehicle running boards and reached through the window of the car, try to prevent Huang from leaving with her property. Huang, knowing that the subject was still on the car, drove away at approximately 45 mph down Prospect Avenue.

A security guard from a local business, according to the police, spotted Huang and the female subject fighting and detained them until police could arrive. The unidentified 33-year-old woman was not seriously injured.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune is reporting that Huang, 35, was born in Taipei, Taiwan and immigrated to California at the age of nine. He attended the University of Southern California and now lectures at its school of architecture.

Huang was appointed to the San Gabriel City Council in 2006, following the death of the city's first Asian mayor Chi Mui, and reelected in 2007. He is also the principal and executive officer of several real estate development, construction and design companies including Richmont Development Corporation and Studio R Inc.

Huang lives in San Gabriel with his wife Maryann Chen and their daughter Madison.
