Midwick development placed on hold, Councilman says *Updated
A controversial proposal for scores of new homes in the Midwick Tract area has been put on hold, according to a letter that Councilman Steven Placido is sending to some constituents and plans to read at Monday's City Council meeting.
"I wanted to let each of you know that the Midwick Project proposed by City Ventures has officially been put on indefinite HOLD," Placido wrote. "This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the caring people that live in the neighborhood. Thus, you, the residents, should be congratulated for your commitment to the neighborhood."
Developer City Ventures teamed up with current property owner, Front Porch, for the proposed project of townhomes and single-family houses. After negotiating with residents, City Ventures decreased the number of units from 93 to 70 and replaced the nine luxury homes for two-story single-family homes. Residents, though, continued to fight the development and said it would ruin the character of their neighborhood and create safety risks.
A driving force in the movement to stop the development has been Elizabeth Salinas, an attorney and a founder of Preserve Midwick, a grassroots effort which gathered more than 600 signatures for a petition and hosted numerous meetings for constituents to raise concerns. Salinas has also been highly critical of the Council's position in not doing more to stop the development and is running against Placido in this fall's City Council race.
"This victory is not me, and it’s certainly not him. It’s a group effort. It’s all the Midwick People who walked door to door and got signatures," Salinas said. "I agree with Steven Placido on congratulating our efforts. I just don’t agree that he is part of his group."

Midwick Proposal Update
From Steve Placido, Alhambra City Councilmember July 8, 2012
I wanted to let each of you know that the Midwick Project proposed by City Ventures has officially been put on indefinite HOLD.
Our voices were heard. Our concerns were addressed. Our efforts were productive.
This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the caring people that live in the neighborhood. Thus, you, the residents, should be congratulated for your commitment to the neighborhood.
Together we stood shoulder-to-shoulder addressing neighborhood concerns. I made sure your voices were heard, and together, we have brought change to our community.
With the information collected through a series of Town Hall meetings, the property owners gained great insight into the character of the Midwick neighborhood. I am proud of the response from the Midwick residents.
The property owner, Front Porch, and the developer, City Ventures are reportedly rethinking their conceptual plans. There are no alternative plans for this property at this time
