Memorial service to be held Saturday for Alhambra student who died while hiking at Eaton Canyon
Marl Keppel High School senior Esther Suen died Friday from a fall while hiking at Eaton Canyon. Her family and friends will hold a memorial ceremony Saturday at 10 a.m. at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Alhambra, World Journal (世界日报）reports.
Suen's parents were heartbroken about the tragedy, Suen's aunt told World Journal. The 17-year-old was an excellent student, and had already been admitted to Cornell University, UC San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University. She planned to study bioengineering.
Suen fell 200 feet from a cliff while on a spring break hike. The safety problems at the accident's location had previously been raised, according to Suen's aunt, but the park did not take further action to strengthen the security other than placing a warning sign.
After the tragedy the Sheriff's Department released a statement urging: “Don't believe the false information. There is NO safe trail to the second waterfall.” They also shared a public information video that had been created previously about the risks in the area.
