Fraudulent 'police associations' scam SGV small business owners

Many Chinese American small business owners have fallen victim to fraud and exploitation recently, as callers posing as 'police associations' solicit cash donations, World Journal reports.

In many cases, businesses have donated hundreds of dollars at a time, especially since the callers seem to target recent immigrants, who may feel obligated to donate when someone says they are from a police agency. Senior Lead Officer Danny Chao of the LAPD says that they are aware of these phone calls and advises that business owners not make any donations to groups claiming to be police organizations. Chao also pointed out that police departments do not solicit cash from businesses, nor are businesses ever obligated to make donations, even to law enforcement agencies.
