Many Alhambra residents will light on Friday "Safe and Sane" fireworks — fountains, sparklers, and other devices that do not leave the ground. While these Fourth of July fireworks are legal in Alhambra, they can still be dangerous if not used correctly.

Check out these fireworks safety tips, courtesy of the Alhambra Fire Department, and have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

  • Never allow young children to handle or use fireworks.
  • Closely supervise teens who are using fireworks.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors.
  • Never use fireworks near dry grass or other flammable materials.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never experiment with or modify fireworks.
  • Have a bucket of water and a hose handy if you are using fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the caution label before igniting.
  • Do not wear loose-fitting clothing when igniting fireworks.
  • Use only State Fire Marshal-approved "Safe and Sane" fireworks, with the following seal:

  • Do not drink alcohol while igniting fireworks.
  • Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
  • Only light one firework at a time.
  • Never re-light or "fix” used fireworks. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives; they can cause serious injury to you or those around you.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.
  • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor, fire resistant garbage can away from buildings and flammable materials.

Unfortunately, many residents will also light illegal fireworks endangering neighbors and homes.

Come on Alhambra Police. Do your job and stop the illegal fireworks. Don't ignore calls like you did last year. Remember, we pay you, not the fireworks industry supporting city council.
