Assembly candidate's wife sues for invasion of privacy

The wife of Dr. Matthew Lin, the Republican candidate for the 49th State Assembly District, is suing Lin's Democratic opponent Ed Chau over invasion of privacy, Patch Arcadia reports. Joy Lin alleges that Chau put her at risk of identity theft by publishing her Social Security number in campaign mailers and a YouTube video seen by thousands of residents in the San Gabriel Valley.

The lawsuit alleges that Chau's campaign released copies of government tax liens against Lin and his wife with her Social Security number legible in the image. The liens were at least a decade old and in one case, issued in error.

Chau's campaign manager Josh Pulliam told KPCC that the image of the lien document was unknowingly included. Pulliam said the campaign offered an apology and removed the image from the video and agreed not to redistribute the mailer. The Chau campaign also offered to cover the cost of identity theft protection but Lin declined.
