AHS teachers advocate for opportunity to see game at Dodger Stadium

Teachers at Alhambra High School have requested that Friday's school day is shortened so students can show their support for their fellow Moors at the CIF championship baseball game. The game is the first time in 85 years the team has reached this level. AHS will play Bonita High School tomorrow at 1:30 pm at Dodger Stadium. Alhambra Unified administrators rejected the request, even though BHS, according to its website, has arranged for a minimum day schedule and shuttle buses to allow for students to attend the game.
"If BHS was able to arrange for their students to attend the game, why can’t AHS?" AHS math teacher Paul Stein asked.
AUSD superintendant Dona Pérez responded in an e-mail that "Ed. Code states school districts must give parents a 30 day notice of a minimum day so child care can be arranged.” Other reasons such as possible Title IX violations were also cited as barriers to approve for a minimum day schedule tomorrow.
For Stein, this rationale was not sufficient. "Sometimes school pride should take precedence over state-mandated regulations, especially for such a historic event," he said. “We spend all kinds of time and money to talk about ways of building unity and community pride and here is a golden opportunity right in front us yet red tape and beurocracy are stopping us."

Post a commentOnce again STUPID, BONE-HEADED HIGH PAID STIFF BUREAUCRATS are afraid of supporting student's interests & achievements; I'm glad I took my daughters out of the Alhambra School District & sent them to private schools.
Thank you for your support Mr. Mejia. Hopefully the next time this happens we will have a better response. As it turned out, technology prevented many teachers and students from being able to watch the broadcast and the opportunity was completely squandered.
Though I am not a graduate of the school, the baseball team going to the championship is very historical and monumentous event that should be supported by school district. Being a spouse of one of the staff members at the school, I believe school district administrators and board members should look at the big picture and allow the minimum day. The baseball team is a top notch program that is bring good publicity to the district. Therefore, I believe school spirit should supersede regulations this one time. Good job Mr. Stein and the rest of the school staff for trying to bring back school spirit.
I just wanted to clarify that it is not a matter of insufficient rationale as much as it is a sad one. It is unfortunate that we live in a litigious society where fear of liability and a convoluted abundance of regulations make it impractical to take advantage of such a great community building opportunity like this one. While I don't like the decision that prevents some staff and students from going to the game, I understand it in the context of existing legalities and if I was faced with the potential of being sued I might make a similar decision.
In fairness to the AUSD and the Board of Education, the website that will show the broadcast of the game will be unblocked so that the game can be viewed by those who remain at school. They are trying to let us celebrate to the extent that they can while avoiding any liability.
So today I will to to school and teach my heart out as usual. I will be wearing my blue and gold to support our wonderful Moors and their great accomplishment. Like many others, I wish I were there, but I will be at the game in spirit!
Good luck Moors Baseball! We are all so very proud of you.
By the way, the game can be viewed on Foxsportswest.com at 1:30 pm by clicking on the PrepZone banner at the left of the page.
This is a major event in AHS history anyone and everyone who is able to attend should be there to support their respective teams. its very sad that as usual Alhambra unified does not support athletic teams or extra curricular activities. Being a former Moor it makes me happy to see the team make it this far and i wish them the best of luck.
