Alhambra Preservation Group (APG) will present its 2012 Heritage Home Awards at its fall event. At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, four local property owners will be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the preservation of Alhambra’s built environment. The event will take place in Reese Hall at the Alhambra Civic Center Library, located at 101 South First Street in Alhambra.

“These homeowners have made a considerable investment in our community and its history by maintaining the character of their historic homes,” said Christine Olson, APG President. “We are proud to honor their efforts.”

When you think about how little the City of Alhambra has done throughout its history to protect these beautiful, characteristic homes (and has lost countless historic homes and structures rivaling our more-attuned neighbors to the north), these kinds of award recognitions are valuable to our communities.

I wish our politicians were not so well-connected to developers and their own profit motives in the form of campaign contributions as well as personal property acquisition. I can't think of ANY councilmember in my 40-years of living here that ran on the platform of "improving our neighborhoods." Every one of them has had an "individual property owner rights" mentality instead of looking at it from what benefits the communities as a whole. Just look at some of the blighted areas where apartments and condos are abundant (graffiti, shopping carts, etc.).
