Alhambra couple to receive Cal State L.A.’s 2011 University Service Award

Roll out the “black and gold” carpet…. California State University, Los Angeles announces Alhambra residents Annie Chin Siu, D.D.S., and Tim K. Siu, M.D., as the recipients of Cal state L.A.’s 2011 University Service Award.
Annie is a retired orthodontist, and Tim is a retired anesthesiologist and a
World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Both have assisted in establishing numerous scholarships at CSULA, including an endowed Siu Family Scholarship for the University’s School of Nursing to honor their daughter, Valerie, a CSULA nursing alumna.
Annie opened her orthodontic practice in 1955, joining the Alhambra Chamber
of Commerce. She created thousands of “beautiful smiles” for children and
adults for 40 years. She was elected president of the Alhambra Chamber in
1987 and organized the first Rose Queen and Court Luncheon in Alhambra, which
is still celebrated today. Annie has been a member of the Soroptimist Club of
Alhambra-San Gabriel-San Marino since 1957, where she has served as president
and chair of the literacy program. She also served on the boards of United
Way, Alhambra Community Hospital and the USC School of Dentistry Board of
Councilors. She and her husband, Tim, chaired the capital campaign for the
new Alhambra Public Library. She taught at the USC School of Dentistry as an
assistant clinical professor for more than 25 years.
For many decades, Tim has contributed his time and talent to his community as
a physician, philanthropist and educator. He served as the medical examiner
for the National Youth Sports Program at USC, and was the team doctor for the
Alhambra High School Football Team. He helped charter Continental Bank of
Alhambra, which later merged with Tokai Bank, which is now part of Bank of
West. He is professor emeritus of the USC Medical School, and was director of
the disaster committee of the American Red Cross. Since 1969, he has
supported Rotary International and its many projects, having received its
2007 Distinguished Service Award. He also served on the CSULA President’s
Advisory Board and the board of the West San Gabriel Valley YMCA.
In addition to the Siu’s, eight outstanding CSULA alumni and two students
will be recognized during the 37th annual Alumni Awards Gala Thursday, Oct.
6, at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, on the Cal State L.A. campus. For a list
